Cowley Hill Geography Curriculum Statement

Curriculum Intent:

Geography is essentially about understanding the world we live in. It helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. At Cowley Hill, we aim to provide children with learning experiences that provide opportunities to investigate a range of questions and develop an understanding of what makes where they live unique and articulate reasons behind this.

We aim to encourage children to become resourceful and resilience through the programme of study. This encourages our children to become independent learners allowing learning to continue outside of the classroom environment.

Geography is an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. At Cowley Hill, our intent is to develop these geographical skills year on year to provide children with the foundations to explore and understand the world around them. This, in turn, equips children with the skills and knowledge to become geographical lifelong learners and develop a true love and curiosity for the subject.

 

We aim to equip pupils with cultural capital, preparing children with the essential georgraphical knowledge and skills for what comes next. The exploration of new skills and experiences helps to nurture resilience, curiosity and creativity. Through this journey, children develop new forms of cultural capital that makes a difference in individual mind-sets, which consequently shapes their future. 

 

Curriculum Implementation:

Geography is taught as part of a half-termly topic, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. All geography lessons are planned and taught in line with the National Curriculum and are supported by the schools geographical skills and knowledge progression document. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. It is important that children develop the skills of a geographer by fully immersing them in all areas of the subject.

The local area is fully utilised to achieve desired outcomes through inspiring and exciting the children with what they know around them. This provides opportunities for learning outside the classroom and embedding key skills learnt in the classroom. School trips and fieldwork are provided to give first hand experiences, which enhance children’s understanding of the world beyond their locality and allows children to experience what makes where they live unique.

 

Curriculum Impact:

At Cowley Hill Primary School, children develop a real sense of curiosity to find out about the world and the people who live there, through their learning of Geography. Children understand how Geography has shaped their lives and the world today. Continuing to build on their knowledge, we hope that the children will continue to be interested in the developments of our planet throughout their life. Children have a good understanding of locational knowledge and have an understanding of where places are and what they are like. As children progress through the school, they develop knowledge of the world around them and can also think about their local area and its place within the wider world. Additionally, we aim that our children will have the ability to form opinions, take responsibility and share an understanding about current and contemporary issues in society and the environment.

 

The impact of our curriculum is under constant review and development to ensure that it appropriately meets the needs of our children, supporting and challenging pupils to achieve their full potential.

Our curriculum is regularly monitored by:

  • Assessing children’s existing understanding and vocabulary, before and after the unit is taught.
  • Assessing children’s’ learning behaviours working towards an objective such as confidence, engagement, self-motivation, resilience, curiosity.
  • Moderation of effective planning and lesson sequences.
  • Summative assessment of children’s discussions about their learning.
  • Assessment of recorded work, which may include work in books, images of practical activities, electronic work stored on Google Classroom.
  • Interviewing the children about their learning (pupil voice).
  • Moderation staff meetings where children’s books are scrutinised and there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers to understand their class’s work.
