MFL (French) At Cowley Hill
Intent:
Learning an additional language is a crucial part of learning to be a global citizen. At Cowley Hill our KS2 pupils learn French. Our main focus is on speaking and listening so that pupils can put their new language skills to immediate, practical use. Pupils will also learn to read and write in French. Lessons are led from the Language Angels program, which uses a variety of resources including audio clips, slides, songs and quizzes.
Ensure substantial progress in French learning through three key pillars:
Phonics
Vocabulary
Grammar
Create confident language learners who can understand basic French and speak in simple phrases
Build solid foundations in French before the end of KS2
Develop pupils' ability to read texts accurately
Understanding the importance of cognates in knowledge of French (cognate: words that are similar across different languages)
Implementation: Through three integrated pillars:
Phonics:
Progressive learning from Year 3 to Year 6
Supported by phonics mats and regular revision
Both explicit and implicit phoneme teaching
Vocabulary:

Progressive development from Early Language to Intermediate and Progressive stages
Regular consolidation and expansion of vocabulary range
Grammar:

Moves from implicit to explicit teaching approach as pupils progress through KS2
Age-appropriate and carefully sequenced
Constantly reinforced through different units
Impact:
Pupils develop accurate phonetic recognition and recall
Build comprehensive vocabulary knowledge
Understand and apply grammar
Progress through three teaching stages:
Early Language
Intermediate
Progressive
Regular assessment through unit completion and revision through a spiral curriculum taken from the Language Angels program
Pupils have the opportunity through French conversation, language days and singing to practise their French regularly. By the end of KS2 they should have a solid basis to take their language skills forward.
