This term we are thinking about Growing, Animals and Transition. As we near the end of Nursery we will be thinking about the changes that will be occurring and getting ready for Reception. We have been learning all about the changes animals go through and the life-cycles of some of these animals. We have really enjoyed linking our learning to the story The Hungry Caterpillar. We have been using our small world area to identify different animals and their babies.

We have also been focusing on our communication and language this term. We have been taking part in many carpet sessions on different topics where we have been sharing and explaining our own ideas, talking about what has already happened and what may happen next and recreating roles during our play. We have thoroughly enjoyed using the role play area to recreate different roles learnt in stories. We have particularly enjoyed recreating the roles of aliens from the book Aliens love Underpants and the caterpillar and butterfly in The Hungry Caterpillar.

We have also been learning about celebrations, who and why we celebrate these. The children had a fantastic time cooking for Shrove Tuesday and are enjoying learning about Easter in the build up to the Easter holidays. We have made Chinese New Year lanterns and have spoken about Mother’s day, why this is special and the special people in our lives.

In Maths this term we will be exploring shapes, capacity and numbers larger than 10. We have been enjoying looking for shapes in our environment and exploring capacity in the sand and water areas. We have also been learning to represent numbers in different ways using objects, mark marking or forming the correct number.

In Nursery we have also been continuing our Phonics learning and can now say, write and use their Phase 2 sounds when reading and writing. We have been enjoying using our phonics knowledge in our exploring time to write short captions and sentences to accompany our exploring.
