Reception

All About Me

Welcome to Reception and, for some of you, to the beginning of your child’s learning journey at Cowley hill.

This term we will be spending time to help the children feel settled and ready to learn. This will include learning the school routines, rules and expectations, as well as learning to form meaningful friendships. It is also important for us to take some time to ensure the children know how to stay safe while at school. Within this topic we will be spending time to teach the children about the importance of hand washing and good hygiene.

This term we will be celebrating ‘All about me’. We will be looking at the different make-ups of families, exploring our similarities, differences, and people who are important to us.

In our creative learning, we will be creating our self-portraits and exploring how to mix colours.

As we continue to settle into school, the children will discuss their interests and we will use these to create learning opportunities which excite and engage all children. We will be using the children’s ‘All about me’ books and use circle time to share these books and build conversations about our families and home lives. We will also use a range of stories to discuss what we want to be when we grow up.

During our PE we will look at the effects of exercise on the body, and how we can keep the body healthy; looking at the things we eat and how to clean our teeth.

This term we will be working hard to develop our mark making, including how to write our name, and begin to form letters. We will also begin our reading development as we learn our phase 2 sounds, this term we will begin to blend sounds together to read.

In our Maths learning, we will practise our counting skills, learning to count in a one-to-one correspondence, finding one more and one less, and exploring 2D shapes. We will be exploring the seasons and going on a hunt to find signs of Autumn.

We are looking forward to working alongside you to support your children and their learning.

The Reception Team

The school works closely with The BECC to offer children and families, skills, support and advise. We run many sessions with the BECC from Cook 4 life to Tea club through Foundation stage. Please take a look at their website to see what they have to offer in the local area including parenting courses and stay and play sessions.
