PE and Sport

Cowley Hill PE Curriculum Statement

Curriculum Intent:

As an Advocate School for Sport England, at Cowley Hill we strive to ensure that we provide an inclusive and inspiring PE provision which enables all children to participate and develop a positive approach towards PE and Sport.

Throughout our PE coverage, children have the opportunity to implement and demonstrate our PE and Sports Values; Determination, Passion, Respect, Honesty, Self-Belief and Teamwork. Children have the opportunity to embed and develop our reasoning skills through our PE curriculum. The children at Cowley Hill Primary School will be able to apply and understand the skills needed for a healthy life style, a balanced diet and positive mind-set whilst embedding My Personal Best Life Skills.

We will provide children with many opportunities to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities. Provided with opportunities, our children will participate in competitive sports, non-competitive sports and extra-curricular clubs.

We aim to equip pupils with cultural capital, preparing children with the essential knowledge and skills of physical education for what comes next. The exploration of new skills and experiences helps to nurture resilience, curiosity and creativity. Through this journey, children develop new forms of cultural capital that makes a difference in individual mind-sets, which consequently shapes their future.

Curriculum Implementation:

Children receive two PE lessons a week as part of a broad and balanced curriculum giving our children the opportunity to develop and improve an array of skills through a range of indoor and outdoor activities. Children learn to explore, develop and progress key skills within key focus areas. Areas of focus include gross motor skills, fundamental movement skills, hand-eye co-ordination, balance and agility. These skills are then applied to a range of physical activities and sports covering invasion games, net-wall games, striking and fielding and dance. In Key Stage 2, children also receive a term of swimming lessons.

Children's' learning during their curriculum PE lessons is enhanced and furthered through our extensive Extra Curricular Provision. This includes PE and Sports clubs before school, during lunchtimes and after school. Children are also provided with opportunities to participate in competitive sport through fixtures, tournaments and events via the Sports Partnership and Sports Consortium.

The Daily Mile

At Cowley Hill we participate in "The Daily Mile". The Daily Mile gets children out of the classroom for fifteen minutes every day to run or jog, at their own pace, with their classmates, making them fitter, healthier, and more able to concentrate in the classroom. This also supports the Government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day.

Curriculum Impact:

At Cowley Hill Primary School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Our children are physically active, and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise. We hope children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they pursue outside of school and in future life outside of primary school. All children understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson. Year 6 children leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently.

The impact of our curriculum is under constant review and development to ensure that it appropriately meets the needs of our children, supporting and challenging pupils to achieve their full potential.

Our curriculum is regularly monitored by:

  • Assessing children’s existing understanding and vocabulary, before and after the unit is taught.
  • Assessing children’s’ learning behaviours working towards an objective such as confidence, engagement, self-motivation, resilience, curiosity.
  • Moderation of effective planning and lesson sequences.
  • Summative assessment of children’s discussions about their learning.
  • Assessment of recorded work, which may include work in books, images of practical activities, electronic work stored on Google Classroom.
  • Interviewing the children about their learning (pupil voice).
  • Moderation staff meetings where children’s books are scrutinised and there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers to understand their class’s work.
